Driving up to Castlerigg Hall in autumn is a treat in itself. The A591 winds past Thirlmere towards Keswick with the low sun lighting up entire hillsides in a warm glow. Look north and you’ll see the fells alive with purple heather.
Check-in at Castlerigg Hall is simple and friendly. Staff are well used to autumn visitors and are quick to share tips – which paths are driest after rain, where the best views are at sunset, or which café will welcome you and your muddy boots.

The Luxury Pods
Castlerigg Hall isn’t a one-size-fits-all glamping spot – the site has a real mix of options depending on how much space, comfort or quirkiness you’re after!
Hex Pods are the stars of the show. With their striking honeycomb design, they feel both futuristic and cosy at the same time. Inside, they’re surprisingly spacious: a king-size bed, optional sofa bed for children in some units, a private bathroom, and self-catering facilities. Add to that a balcony, sofa, and large flat-screen TV, and you’ve got something that feels as much boutique hideaway as glamping pod. Some are dog-friendly too, so the whole family can enjoy the adventure.
If you like the sound of a luxury pod but want something a little simpler, the Inspire Pods are a great option. They sleep two adults (plus children on a sofa bed if required – only in the Helvellyn unit), with the same comforts – private WC, shower, kitchenette, sofa and TV – but without pets.

Families often love the Castle Pods, which come with a double bed and bunk beds, making them ideal for children. You still get heating, a bathroom, a balcony and a sofa – so evenings are cosy and practical after a day exploring Keswick.
For a more pared-back version, there are Family Pods and Standard Pods. These are simpler, without fixed beds and are excellent value. For those staying in these pods, the campers’ kitchen on site is a real asset – a warm, sociable space to cook and eat when you want a bit more room than your pod allows. Both options welcome dogs, so they’re perfect if you’re bringing a four-legged friend along.

In autumn, the outdoors is a huge part of the appeal. Most pods come with a small deck or seating area. Wrap up warm in a fleece, step outside with a hot drink, and watch the light shift across the fells. On crisp, clear nights, the stars here are astonishing. The Milky Way often stretches right overhead, a reminder of just how far from city lights you really are. You may well see a shooting star or, if you’re very lucky, the Northen Lights and if you’re exceptionally fortunate a comet!

Life in Keswick in Autumn
Keswick remains one of the Lake District’s most welcoming towns. Outdoor gear shops, independent cafés and a bustling market on Thursdays and Saturdays. You’ll never be short of places to browse or linger. Autumn slows the pace; visitors wander rather than rush, and locals have more time to stop and chat.
The market is perfect for stocking up on local treats including artisan cheese, jars of chutney, or slabs of handmade fudge. Perfect treats after a long walk.

A short stroll from Castlerigg Hall brings you to this ancient monument, set on a grassy plateau with sweeping views of the surrounding fells. In autumn, mist often drifts across the fields, half-hiding the stones and giving the whole place a mysterious, timeless atmosphere.

Walla Crag
Climb up to Walla Crag and you’ll be rewarded with one of the finest views of Derwentwater. The path meanders through woodland and across open fell, giving you a full palette of autumn colours along the way. On a clear day, you can see right across to the distant peaks.

Looking for something gentle? The lakeshore path to Friar’s Crag is ideal. It’s short, easy and ends at a viewpoint that captures Derwentwater in all its autumn glory. Reflections of gold and red trees across the water.

Of course Autumn makes every meal more satisfying. After hours outdoors, you return hungry, ready for something hearty. Keswick has plenty of options: pubs with roaring fires, restaurants serving local lamb or Cumberland sausage, and shops where you can stock up on good ingredients.
If you’re cooking in your pod or lodge, keep it simple: pasta with a rich sauce, soup with crusty bread, or a cheese board with local chutney. And we have plenty of locally sourced options available in our onsite shop.
