Our Green ethos
We feel it is important to reduce our carbon footprint and increase the biodiversity within our holiday park landscape. We look to minimise our impact on the environment, recycling, reducing waste and engaging in the local community. We wish to provide our guests a wonderful stay and enrich their experience with our green inititives.
Castlerigg Hall has been a member of the Bellamy Conservation scheme since 1998 and in that time has been awarded many accolades for conservation.
Renewable Energy
In addition to the wildlife and habitat work we have also been investing in renewable heat and were the first park in our area of the Lake District to install ground source heat recovery back in 2008 This provided the underfloor heating to our main campfield toilet block and has been warmly received by our guests.
In 2008 we also installed solar PV to our main facility building and in 2012 the underfloor heating in our new gallery here at Castlerigg was supplied by an air source heat pump.
In 2016 our Camping Pod toilet facilities were upgraded and extended. To provide underfloor heating and hot water to this facility we explored different options and decided upon a *smart computerised system which would recognise and switch between two renewable heat sources (Solar Thermal and Air Source) to prioritise for maximum efficiency backed up by LPG.
And in 2020 we fitted our third air source heat pump to provide heating and hot water via a heat main to our new Hex Pod glamping units.
*Although this was a significant investment the reduction in our carbon footprint has been significant and recognised by the late Professor David Bellamy who said;
“Congratulations, I am delighted that you have once again championed a really important local charity with your always innovative fundraising. I am also particularly impressed by your amazing computer-controlled sustainable energy system into your newly refurbished facility block. In addition, well done on all the hard work you have done to help Britain’s bees – you are officially a “Honey Bee Friendly” park”

Pop into reception for our bus timetable. We are only a few hundred yards from the 555 bus route that accesses the central lakes. Leave your car or motorhome on site and discover Grasmere, Windermere and Ambleside and the glorious mountain and lake scenery along the route. Local Suppliers
As our roots are in farming we feel it is important to support and use local suppliers for our campsite shop where possible. Whether eating bangers/toast and jam for breakfast or an evening BBQ washed down with a cold beer outside your tent / caravan / pod, you can be sure we offer a local Cumbrian option.

We also look to reduce plastic. Our crisps are supplied by Two Farmers who use 100% compostable packaging.
Two Farmers is the UK’s first 100% compostable and plastic-free crisp brand, with packets made from cellulose and sustainably grown eucalyptus trees from managed plantations.
Dark Skies
A Canopy of Stars: Is there anything better when camping under the stars to take a moment to gaze up and marvel at the Cosmos. Here in the Lake District we are lucky that the wonder of the night sky and the canopy of stars are still very much visible with minimal light pollution allowing us to see the moon, stars, planets and our Milky Way in all their glory. In fact Castlerigg Stone Circles’ location was probably chosen for its views of the night sky.
To try to minimise any light pollution we have a management plan for lighting on our park here at Castlerigg Hall. You will notice we only have occasional lights around the park to find your way which direct the light downward as do external lights on the facilities. Don’t forget, we offer free use of Binoculars at our reception (security deposit required).
