Castlerigg Hall on Facebook

Yesterday's sunrise was spectacular. These phone photos are taken on the path leading from our park to Castlerigg Stone Circle. I often wonder if (at this point) it is an old Roman Road junction as turning left takes you to the site of the Roman Fort. Straight on and a sunken track is still visible. Could this be a long lost road that linked Castlerigg to Galava Fort at Ambleside? The garrison stationed at Castlerigg would have required water and the easiest route would have been to use the track I'm walking to Brockle Beck. There is also evidence of a lost track dropping down through Great Wood. Of course this speculation is all about 'recent' history compared to the ancient 4500 year old Castlerigg Stone Circle! If the fells could talk what stories they could tell.

Beautiful pictures. I did that walk with my dog every day when I stayed a couple of weeks ago.

<3 that walk! We did it at about 2.30am last year to see a meteor shower at the stone circle!

Stunning photos

One of my favorite walks...I have wondered about that path as well. It's definitely more than just a farm track. Too even, wide, and consistent. Your theory would definitely make sense!

What beautiful colours, lovely place.

We do the walk to the stone circle when we stay with you - usually at about 6am when it's quiet!

Brilliant, we love it.

Julie Speight this is the site. It's fantastic. Best site we've ever been to! xx

On these colder nights a look back to a beautiful morning, taken from the path up Walla Crag, only a 15 minute walk from our park.
