Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little Stay at Castlerigg Hall on Their Northern Road Trip

Fans of the much-loved British sitcom The Royle Family were thrilled when stars Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little reunited for a nostalgic and entertaining journey across the North of England in their series, Ricky & Ralf’s Very Northern Road Trip.

Travelling by motorhome, the pair embarked on a six-episode adventure to rediscover the hidden gems and unique character of Northern towns and countryside — and of course, share laughs and memories along the way. One of the most memorable episodes of the show brought them to Cumbria and the heart of the Lake District National Park, where they spent a night under the stars at our very own Castlerigg Hall Caravan, Camping and Glamping Park near Keswick.

Episode 2: Ricky & Ralf Visit the Lake District

In Episode 2 of the series, Ricky and Ralf headed into Cumbria after visiting the famous Kendal Mint Cake factory, arriving at Castlerigg Hall late in the evening — just in time to cook a meal in their motorhome and settle in for a night of glamping in the Lake District.

As a family-run, award-winning campsite near Keswick, we were delighted to welcome the comedy duo. Despite their late arrival, the pair quickly got into the camping spirit — cooking dinner in the dark and playfully arguing over who would eat the chocolate mint cake.

Waking Up to Views Across Derwentwater

The next morning, viewers were treated to one of the show’s most entertaining moments. Ricky launched into booming impersonations of actor Brian Blessed, shouting “Gordon’s alive!” which echoed across the valley as they pulled back their curtains to reveal breathtaking views across Derwentwater and the Lakeland Fells.

Our camping and glamping park in Keswick offers some of the best panoramic views in the Lake District, and it was wonderful to see the pair so taken by the scenery. They spent the morning soaking it all in with tea, cake, and a visit to Castlerigg Gallery, located on-site.

While much of the footage of nearby fells like Catbells and Walla Crag didn’t make the final cut, the crew captured the stunning autumn colours that visitors can experience throughout the season.

Scenic Driving Through the Lake District

After leaving Castlerigg Hall, Ricky and Ralf continued their scenic Cumbrian adventure with a visit to the quirky and world renown Keswick Pencil Museum, home to the world’s largest colouring pencil. From there, they took one of the Lake District’s most popular campervan routes — through the stunning Borrowdale Valley, climbing the dramatic Honister Pass, then heading through Buttermere and back via Whinlatter Pass.

They remarked on the area’s natural beauty throughout, with rich autumn colours, craggy mountain views, and traditional Lakeland charm all along the route.

Fine Dining and Northern Hospitality

Their Lake District experience concluded with a meal at the renowned Cottage in the Wood — a fine dining restaurant nestled in Whinlatter Forest. After that, the duo travelled north to Carlisle, where they rounded off their Cumbrian visit with a day at the races.
