Discover the captivating Borrowdale Rainforest: an enchanting treasure nestled within the breathtaking beauty of the Lake District.

Nestled here in the heart of the Lake District lies the Borrowdale Valley, a place well known for its natural beauty. But did you know it is also home to a rainforest? The Borrowdale Oakwoods are one of England’s few remaining areas of temperate rainforest, a rare habitat that was once more widespread across the UK.

Where is borrowdale?

Borrowdale Valley winds 7 miles from Keswick following the river Derwent onto Seathwaite. The name ‘Derwent’ is thought to be derived from the Celtic word meaning ‘abounding in oaks’ showing the rich history of these beautiful woodlands. Here at Castlerigg Hall we have beautiful views onto Borrowdale Valley and direct walks from the park.

Why Borrowdale Rainforest Is Unique

Temperate rainforests are among the world’s rarest habitats, with a balance of temperature and moisture that the western UK’s climate provides. When visiting Borrowdale, you’ll notice a spectacular array of green, with mosses and ferns clinging to oak and birch trees. It’s a unique environment that supports a vast array of animals, plants and fungi!

Conservation Efforts and Community

In partnership with the National Trust and Natural England, local farmers, businesses and land managers are currently working to expand and protect this rainforest in a bid to declare the area a National Nature Reserve.
