winner of the cumbria in bloom tourism category 5 trophy
We were absolutely delighted to receive the trophy in 2024!
The judges assess entries based on a range of horticultural and environmental best practices, considering the following key elements:
- Horticultural contributions that enhance the site’s appearance.
- Environmental responsibility, including efforts to protect and encourage local flora and fauna, implement waste management strategies, create safe wildlife areas, and support biodiversity.
- Recognition and promotion of the local setting and heritage, helping to enhance guests’ appreciation of the area.
- Overall impact and community engagement, evaluating how the entry has addressed these elements through initiatives such as PR efforts and staff involvement.
In what was a highly competitive category, selecting a winner was no easy task. However, Castlerigg Hall stood out for its long-standing commitment to sustainability, thoughtful park development, dedication to renewable energy, and the creation of a thriving wildlife haven. Its strong community engagement ultimately earned it the Cumbria in Bloom Holmes of Natland Trophy.
Park owner David Jackson emphasized that this achievement was a true team effort. He gave special recognition to his wife, Jill, who cultivates many of the plants in her nursery and is the creative force behind the campsite’s vibrant flower displays. Their son, Josh, has played a key role in enhancing the park’s biodiversity, planting hundreds of wildflower bulbs and native trees over the past five years and contributing to the success of the site’s eco-beehive. David also praised the dedicated team at Castlerigg Hall, whose passion for the landscape is evident in their work—maintaining the park, building bird boxes and bug hotels, and continuously enriching the park’s natural environment.
