We have been actively encouraging more wildlife to Castlerigg Hall and are pleased to report that it’s been working a treat! Thanks to all our red squirrel feeding boxes, bird boxes and bug boxes, our planting of Buddleias, plus leaving some areas unmown, the wildlife keeps coming.
So, you may see wild deer, red squirrels, badgers, owls and a myriad of butterflies, bees and birds during your visit. A little further afield ospreys have returned to the local area. There is an observation point within a short 15-minute drive from Castlerigg Hall where you can gaze at these magnificent birds. To find out more about our Environmental Credentials, click here.
Animals at Castlerigg Hall
Castlerigg Hall is also home to quite a few rare breed animals. Although we aren’t a petting farm, and contact with the animals isn’t possible, you may see them from the lane in the field or catch a glimpse of the Indian Runner Ducks as they wander around the park.
Particularly popular are our Ouessant sheep, one of the smallest sheep breeds in the world. And on the miniature theme we are home to Rusty and Dusty, our miniature Mediterranean donkeys who you may hear them braying or ‘hee hawing’ as dinner is served. Our Kune Kune pig tends to laze in the field and soak up the Lake District sun, or wallow in their mud bath cooling off. You can see them and our Shetland ponies from the footpath going through the park into Keswick. Lastly our site cat ‘Fat Puss’ who loves to sleep and can be spotted in the reception corner quietly snoozing. DOG FRIENDLY LAKE DISTRICT HOLIDAY
Bring your four legged friends
If you have a four-legged friend, bring them along to enjoy the Lake District too. A maximum of two medium-sized dogs are welcome at Castlerigg Hall in some of our Hire Caravans, Camping Pods and Hex Pods, although we are unable to welcome dangerous breeds to the park. Please keep your dogs on a lead unless you are using the dog exercise area, where supervised dogs can be off the lead to explore and let off steam. We also have a designated warm-water dog wash facility on site, so no muddy paw prints after a day exploring the Lakes.
We have some of the best walks in the country for you and your dog with miles upon miles of foot paths leading in all directions through some of the best scenery here in the Lake District. And did you know Keswick has been voted the most dog friendly town for many years so you will find plenty of places you can go whilst here on holiday.
